A School in the Savannah

The village of Cwero is located about 40 km from Gulu, in northern Uganda.

This is a rural area made up of many small villages, where the inhabitants live primarily on subsistence farming. Medical infrastructure is virtually nonexistent—there is only a small dispensary, providing basic and limited healthcare.

This is where KOPE supports a kindergarten, built on land owned by the local community and granted to us for free use. The village chief, who represents the community, is a well-respected person and collaborates actively with our organization.

The kindergarten was built with simplicity and functionality in mind, and currently accommodates around 160 children. The classrooms are equipped with desks, chairs, and blackboards, but resources are limited: some children attend lessons seated on mats or even outside.

The school grounds include a large area where KOPE has built a playground, primarily for kindergarten students but also frequented by other children from nearby villages.

All construction work has been carried out by a local contractor and supervised at every stage by Renzo Beretta, KOPE’s representative for northern Uganda.

A Second, Larger Block of Classrooms: The Start of a Primary School

The project aims to build a second, larger block of classrooms—comprising three classrooms and a teachers’ room—to accommodate the first four grades of primary school, serving at least 150 children.

Il progetto per il nuovo blocco

Borehole Project for the Kindergarten and Primary School

The kindergarten and future school do not have access to drinking water. Currently, water is brought from nearby villages in jerry cans and collected from natural pools or old UN wells that are still functioning.

Equipping the school with a well and pump is essential. This requires drilling to a depth of 50 to 80 meters to find water, followed by the construction of the well.

Estimated cost: to be determined

Toilets Project for the Kindergarten and School

The kindergarten and the future school do not have adequate toilets. The current facilities are very basic and not suitable for the current or future number of students.

Building proper toilets is crucial to obtain official authorization from the Ugandan government to open the school.

Estimated cost: €10,000

Responsabile

Marco Piazza
